Why You Need an Onlay or Crown

Why You Need an Onlay or Crown

womenHikerLGYou may have noticed that Elevated Dental performs onlay and crown services in just one appointment, eliminating the weeks of waiting that used to be associated with this service. An onlay replaces part of a tooth, while a crown covers the whole visible tooth. But why would you need one in the first place?

Here are the reasons why we would suggest you get an onlay or a crown.

Fractures and Cracks

When you have a cracked tooth, or a cuspal fracture, it’s important to receive an onlay, or a crown to prevent further decay and damage. A cuspal fracture happens when the pointed end of the chewing part of your tooth, known as the cusp, becomes weakened and fractures, or cracks. If the fracture extends vertically, it occasionally will make its way all the way to the gum line. While these problems are not  completely preventable, you can be less susceptible by following these four simple rules.
  1. Regular 6 month checkups where we most often find these issues before there is pain or discomfort.
  2. Don’t chew on hard things, such as ice.
  3. Wear a mouthguard during sports activities.
  4. Resist the urge to clench or grind teeth.
  5. If you grind your teeth at night, wear a special mouthguard or retainer when you sleep.

Too Much Decay for a Filling

When you have a cavity, we use white fillings. However, some teeth are so decayed or fractured that they need more than just a filling to ensure that the tooth’s functionality is maintained. This also allows much of the natural tooth to be preserved. For our guests, fortunately , our onlays and crowns are built in house. With a keen eye for detail and comfort, Dr. Holmberg and his staff expertly craft an onlay or crown that will withstand the test of time, but also will blend into your smile with great continuity.

Filling Too Large

At Elevated Dental we hold our service to a higher standard. Link to continuing education. Periodically we need to repair work done at another dental office. For example, one way a dentist may make a mistake is by creating a filling that is too large for the tooth. This will cause pain even after you receive treatment for your cavity. This is true both for children and adults. Fortunately though, we have many years of experience and will gladly fix that tooth with an onlay or crown in usually just one appointment. That way you can get your tooth fixed and get back to life as usual.

We provide excellent dental services to our patients and will be more than happy to treat your teeth using onlays, and crowns. Give us a call at 801-274-7700 for great dental work in Salt Lake City.
